I am a 23 year resident of downtown and have become frustrated with the current direction and recklessness of our government. We need to support our law enforcement, claw back explosive spending, revisit housing policy and broaden our energy portfolio.
We can restore Minneapolis!
Police play a vital role in a comprehensive public safety strategy. To build trust and collaboration within the community, we should focus on recruiting and maintaining sufficient staffing levels, transparency, officer-community engagement, enhanced training (including de-escalation techniques and mental crisis response), and data-driven crime prevention.
Rather than simply throwing money at a problem, empowering communities to grow their own food through private, school, and community gardens can bridge gaps in under-served areas. Reducing reliance on government programs fosters community independence and improves overall health.
Minneapolis residents face mounting energy costs. To address this, we should promote an all-of-the-above energy strategy in an environmentally responsible manner. Government plays a crucial role in fostering energy innovation leading to cleaner, more affordable, and stable energy for our state - we should be a model for others.
The cost of living for everyone is impacted by fuel costs. Gas taxes are embedded all throughout the supply chain, daily commuting and our retail and food deliveries. MN taxes are an average of 10% of the fuel costs. Legislation like this would enact a moratorium annually from Memorial Day to Labor Day when we need it most. See bill here HF 3263
For many Minnesotans, an accessible, effective, safe and efficient public transit system is not feasible for their everyday lives. The taxes imposed on registering a vehicle for the first time and renewing tabs are exorbitant. Legislation like this would reduce the registration tax from 1.285% to 0.965%. On an average $25,000 car, that could be $100/yr in savings. See bill here HF 3111
As Minnesota commits to clean energy and decarbonization, a misstep has been to cut off reliable , sustainable, green nuclear energy from our energy portfolio as we go headlong into solar and wind. Our state's energy portfolio has seen a deliberate decrease in coal, gas and nuclear energy generation which is impacting energy availability, sustainability and affordability during peak times when we need it most. States that have previously banned nuclear and started to decommission plants, have recently reversed course as power needs in the digital and electrified era surges in demand. Legislation like this allows us to remain open to using nuclear options as a stable segment of our energy production. See bill here HF 4430
Taxes should not be imposed by an unelected body that is not held accountable to us, the citizens. Regional sales taxes, retail delivery fees, use taxes etc., imposed by the Met Council, should be repealed. This is not the intended function of this body. Legislation like this would repeal some of these taxing activities and would clarify where the money they do collect is to be applied. See bill here HF 5070
Inflation has made it extremely difficult for working parents to make the decision to place a child in the care of others or to leave the workforce and stay home. Often, this is a purely economic decision. Legislation like this expands the tax credit eligibility. Under current law, if assistance is received to offset some of these expenses, that may be considered taxable income or benefit. These bills are meant to help ease the impact. See bills here HF 4349 and HF 4776
With the surge in online gaming and social media use amongst our youth, mental health crises have also exploded. Schools have become overburdened with needs for physical resources that may not be readily available or affordable in all districts. Legislation like this would allow for telehealth services to be made available as part of their resource toolbox to meet the needs of students. This allows for more flexibility and privacy. See bill here HF 4264
